Southern Photograph

August 2015
Presented by Jerry Atnip

Assignment: Create a uniquely "Southern" image of your own to share and discuss.

The question: what determines an image's "Southern-ness"? What makes a good Southern image? What sets a Southern image apart from others? Jerry Atnip led us through a conversation which began with discussing work and viewing images by photographers recognized as the standard bearers for "Southern" photography, including William Christenberry, William Eggleston, Sally Mann, Shelby Lee Adams, Keith Carter, and many others.

We then moved on to a long list from the current generation of photographers from the South or working with Southern themes, including Magdalena Sole, Eliot Dudik, Jennifer Shaw, Laura Noel, Tamara Reynolds, and others. The images linked below were the salon members' photographic contributions to the discussion.
