This is the photography of PAUL LIEBHARDT. Paul was my first teacher in photography school; he showed us many photos from his travels around the world. I was first struck by his use of composition and light. When I'm traveling, I always have playing in my mind a slideshow of Paul's images and I'm asking myself not how would he shoot it, but how would he see it?© Paul Liebhardt

Paul gravitated towards children in much of his work. Here I'm attempting the same at a daycare outside Cape Town, South Africa.

Another powerful influence is the work of ANNIE LEIBOVITZ. She captures such a great connection with her subjects; I love the way she uses the person's environment to help tell the story. I had the great fortune to work with her on several jobs.© Annie Leibovitz

Annie's photo of Miley Cyrus was in the back of my mind when I made this portrait. This photo and the ones that follow demonstrate how I'm trying to control the light like Annie does.
